About This Compact
Collaborator: Penn State York

The YorkCounts action team that put forth the recommendation to hold a countywide education summit viewed such a gathering as an opportunity to engage community and education stakeholders in collaborating for continuous performance improvement and more equitable access to quality education.

In the spring of 2005, Penn State York assumed responsibility for developing and coordinating the county-wide education summit, with York College of Pennsylvania partnering to convene and launch the project. A 30-person steering committee was appointed to plan a one- to three-day summit for fall 2006. The summit was held on Friday, October 27, 2006 from 8 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a summit kick-off on Thursday, October 26, 2006 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The key areas of focus for the summit, as determined by the steering committee, were: equitable funding, improving academic achievement, parental and community engagement, and countywide collaboration/cooperation.

More than 350 concerned citizens, including parents, educators, and government officials, attended the summit and engaged in discussions about the issues.
